What is IELTS?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a widely accepted English language proficiency test for non-native English speakers. It assesses your ability to understand, speak, read, and write in English and is recognized by educational institutions, employers, and immigration authorities, particularly in countries like the UK, Australia, Canada, the USA, and New Zealand.
There are two types of IELTS tests:
  • Academic IELTS – Designed for individuals who want to study at a university or need certification for professional registration.
  • General Training IELTS – Suitable for those migrating to English-speaking countries for work, training, or secondary education.
You can choose to take the test on paper or on a computer, while the Speaking section is conducted face-to-face with an examiner, which many test-takers find more natural and comfortable compared to computer-based alternatives like the PTE.
Test results are typically available within 13 days for paper-based tests and 1 to 5 days for computer-based tests. Scores remain valid for two years.
IELTS is trusted globally and offered in over 150 countries, making it one of the most popular English language tests in the world.

IELTS Test Format

Listening (40 minutes)

This section has four parts with a total of 40 questions. You’ll hear different English accents and real-life conversations to test your listening skills.
  • Part 1: A conversation between two people about everyday topics.
  • Part 2: A single speaker talking about something like local services or events.
  • Part 3: A group conversation (up to four people) in an academic setting.
  • Part 4: A talk on an academic subject.
Question types include multiple-choice, matching, maps/diagrams, note and sentence completion, and short answers.

Reading (60 minutes)

This section also has 40 questions. The format depends on the module you take—Academic or General Training.
  • Academic Reading: Includes three long texts from books, magazines, or journals. They might have some academic words, but are about general topics.
  • General Training Reading: Has three parts. The first has short everyday texts (like ads), the second includes work-related texts, and the last is a longer, more detailed reading.
Common question types are multiple-choice, matching headings, identifying information, sentence and summary completion, etc.

Writing (60 minutes)

    There are two writing tasks:
  • Task 1 (Academic): Describe and explain a chart, graph, or diagram in at least 150 words.
  • Task 1 (General Training): Write a letter—could be formal, semi-formal, or informal—based on a real-life situation.
  • Task 2 (Both): Write an essay of at least 250 words. You’ll be asked to give your opinion, explain an argument, or discuss a problem.

Speaking (11–14 minutes)

This is a live interview with an examiner and has three parts:
  • Part 1: You’ll answer general questions about yourself, like your hobbies, work, or family (4–5 minutes).
  • Part 2: You’ll get a topic to talk about. You have 1 minute to prepare and must speak for 1–2 minutes.
  • Part 3: You’ll have a deeper discussion with the examiner about the topic from Part 2, for another 4–5 minutes.
